What is the Smart Export Guarantee?

Do you have a renewable home generator system like solar or hydroelectric? Through the Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) So Energy can pay you for any electricity you export to the grid from your own renewable generator.

You don't need to buy electricity from So Energy to benefit from SEG - anyone generating renewable energy is welcome to take up one of our plans.

We have more details on eligibility and our tariffs below but if you would like to sign up for our export tariff, please register here.

How do I know if I'm eligible?

Our export tariffs are available to anyone who has installed one of the following technologies:

  • Solar (also known as Solar Photovoltaic or Solar PV);
  • Wind;
  • Micro Combined Heat and Power (Micro-CHP);
  • Hydroelectric (also know as Hydro); and
  • Anaerobic Digestion (also known as AD).

With the exception of Micro-CHP, your generator can have a capacity of up to 5 Megawatts (5MW, or roughly the same amount of electricity it takes to power a typical household for 1.7 years).

For Micro-CHP, your generator can have a capacity of up to 50kW.

Your generator must also:

  • be signed up to the Micro-generation certification scheme (MCS)or an equivalent scheme to demonstrate the installation and installer are suitably certified.
  • have an export Meter Point Access Number (known as a MPAN, which identifies your export generator);
    • If you don't have an export MPAN, we can install one for you.
  • not already be earning Feed-in-Tariff export payments. The FIT programme ended on 1 April 2019.

How do I start earning export payments?

Stage 1

If you believe you may be eligible for our Smart Export tariff, complete our online form to provide us with some details about you and your generator.

Please make sure you have the following documents available:

  • Your MCS (Micro-generation Certification Scheme) certificate or equivalent scheme certificate. This is to demonstrate the installation and installer are suitably certified. If you are a So Energy Solar customer we will submit these documents on your behalf
  • A copy of the G59/G83/G98/G99 form sent to the Distribution Network Operator (DNO) by your installed and the response if your generator has a declared net capacity of greater than 16A or 3.68kW per phase. This is to show that your generator has been approved by the DNO.
  • Proof of ownership of the generator.

Stage 2

  • As it's not possible to be in receipt of both FIT export and SEG payments, we will verify with Ofgem that your generator is not in receipt of these FIT export payments. If the generator is shown as already on the register, we will let you know and discuss options if you wish to cease your FIT payments.
  • If your generator doesn't have an existing Export MPAN, we will request to register one with your local DNO. This process can take up to 5 working days.

Stage 3

Once these steps have been completed, a member of our team will contact you and get you registered for our export tariff. Once registered, you will receive a confirmation email containing details of your 'SEG Plan'.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where can I find your Smart Export Guarantee Terms and Conditions?

Our Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) terms and conditions can be found here.

I am not a So Energy customer. Can I earn export payments from you?

Yes! If you are eligible for our export tariff, you can still sign up. You can either keep your current supplier for your normal supply or switch that to So Energy as well.

I am currently on the Feed-in-tariff, should I switch to your export tariff?

Whilst you can switch to our export tariff, please check your Feed-in-Tariff rates first, as you may earn more by continuing to receive your Feed-in-Tariff payments. Please remember that Feed-in-Tariff export rates are guaranteed for 20 years from the date your micro-generation system was commissioned and rises with inflation.

You may opt in or out of claiming FIT export payments once every 12 months.

I don't have a Smart Meter, can you install one for me?

If you're a So Energy supply customer, we'll happily arrange to have a Smart Meter installed. You can book a Smart Meter installation here.

If you're having Solar installed with So Energy, there's nothing you need to do. We'll make sure a Smart Meter is provided as part of your installation.

If you're with another supplier and don't have a Smart Meter, please contact them to upgrade your meter, after which we can move you onto our export tariff.
