What is Smart Export Guarantee?

Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) is an obligation for electricity suppliers with over 150,000 customers to pay eligible customers for the electricity they export to the grid from their own renewable generators.

If you have a small-scale, low-carbon emitting generator and you're exporting some or all of its generation to the National Grid through a smart meter, as a Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) Licensee, So Energy may be able to pay you for this energy.

If you believe you may be eligible for our Smart Export Tariff, please complete our online form to provide us with some details about you and your generator.

What is a Smart Export Tariff and how do I know if I'm eligible?

If you have a small-scale, low-carbon emitting generator and you're exporting some or all of its generation to the National Grid through a smart meter, as a Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) Licensee, So Energy may be able to pay you for this energy.

Our smart export tariff may be available to anyone who has installed one of the following technologies up to a capacity of 5MW, or up to 50kW for Micro-CHP:

  • Solar Photovoltaic (solar PV)
  • Wind
  • Micro combined heat and power (CHP)
  • Hydro
  • Anaerobic digestion (AD)

Your generator must also:

  • be signed up to the Micro-generation certification scheme (MCS) or equivalent schemes to demonstrate the installation and installer are suitably certified.
  • have an export MPAN; if you don't have this, we can register one for you.
  • not already be earning Feed-in-Tariff export payments.

How much can I earn for exporting my energy?

If you are eligible for So Energy's smart export tariff, you can earn a fixed price of 5p/kWh for each kWh you export. This price will be fixed for 12 months. You will need to provide an export reading each month and your export payments will be credited to your account.

I am not a So Energy customer. Can I earn export payments from you?

Yes! If you are eligible for our export tariff, you can still sign up. You can either keep your current supplier for your normal supply or switch that to So Energy as well. If you are an export-only So Energy customer, we will refund your export credits to you each month.

I generate my own electricity, but it's not connected to a smart meter or export meter. Can you install one for me?

We are not quite ready to be installing these types of meters ourselves. If you're already a So Energy customer, please get in touch to let us know you're interested in a smart meter and we'll make sure you're one of the first to know when we're doing this. If you're not a So Energy customer, you'll need to speak with your current supplier about getting an eligible meter fitted.

I am currently on the Feed-in-tariff, should I switch to your export tariff?

Whilst you can switch to our export tariff, please check your Feed-in-Tariff rates first, as you may earn more by continuing to receive your Feed-in-Tariff payments. Please remember that Feed-in-Tariff export rates are guaranteed for 20 years from the date your micro-generation system was commissioned and rises with inflation.

You may opt in or out of claiming FIT export payments once every 12 months.

How do I start earning export payments?

Stage 1

If you believe you may be eligible for our Smart Export Tariff, please complete our online form to provide us with some details about you and your generator.

During the online form, we will request copies of the following documents:

  • The MCS (Micro-generation certification scheme) certificate or equivalent scheme certificate. This is to demonstrate the installation and installer are suitably certified.
  • A copy of the G59/G83/G98/G99 form sent to the DNO (Distribution Network Operator) by your installer and the response if your generator has a declared net capacity of greater than 16A or 3.68kW per phase. This is to show that your generator has been approved by the DNO.
  • Proof of ownership of the generator.

Stage 2

  1. As it’s not possible to be in receipt of both FIT export and SEG payments, we will verify with Ofgem that your generator is not in receipt of these FIT export payments. If the generator is shown as already on the register, we will let you know and discuss options if you wish to cease your FIT payments.
  2. If your generator doesn’t have an existing Export MPAN, we will request to register one with your local DNO. This process can take up to 5 working days.

Stage 3

Once these steps have been completed, a member of our team will contact you and get you registered for our Smart Export Tariff.  Once registered, you will receive a confirmation email containing details of your ‘SEG Plan’.
