The Warm Home Discount scheme has changed for 2022/23. This page will explain who will be paid automatically, who will have to apply and what the eligibility criteria are. If you still have questions please read our FAQ's. a

You can qualify for the scheme in one of two ways:

  • Core Group 1 & 2, you don’t need to apply to So Energy
  • Broader Group (Scotland), you will need to apply to So Energy

Core Group 1 (England, Wales and Scotland customers)

You qualify for the Warm Home Discount as part of Core Group 1 if you receive the Guaranteed Credit element of Pension Credit (even if you also receive Savings Credit). 

You do not need to apply to So Energy to receive your rebate as Government will tell us who is eligible.  To receive your rebate from So Energy, you would need to be a So Energy customer on 21st August 2022.  


Core Group 2 (England and Wales customers only)

Core Group 2 has replaced Broader Group for customers that live in England and Wales. You qualify for the Warm Home Discount as part of Core Group 2 if you are identified by DWP as being eligible. For more information on who is eligible please visit the government website. You can also use the Government eligibility checker to see if you are eligible. 

You do not need to apply to So Energy to receive your rebate as Government will tell us who is eligible. You would need to be a So Energy customer on 21st August 2022 to qualify.


Broader group (Scotland customers only) - Now Closed for Winter 2022/23

To receive the Warm Home Discount under the Broader Group, you can apply via your online account if you receive one of the following benefits and meet one of the additional eligibility criteria listed*:

1.      You receive Income Support and one of the following:
(a) You have parental responsibility for a child under the age of 5 or a child under the age of 18 who is in full-time education and normally lives with you.
(b) You receive child tax credit which includes a disability or severe disability element.
(c) You receive a disabled child premium.
(d) You receive a disability premium, enhanced disability premium or severe disability premium.
(e) You receive a pensioner premium, higher pensioner premium or enhanced pensioner premium.
(f) You are aged 65 or over.


2.      You receive Income-related Employment and Support Allowance (IR ESA) which includes a support component or is a member of the work-related activity group and one of the following:
(a) You have parental responsibility for a child under the age of 5 or a child under the age of 18 who is in full-time education and normally lives with you. 
(b)You receive child tax credit which includes a disability or severe disability element
(c) You receive a disabled child premium.
(d) You receive a disability premium, enhanced disability premium or severe disability premium.
(e) You receive a pensioner premium, higher pensioner premium or enhanced pensioner premium.
(f) You are aged 65 or over.


3.      You receive income-based Job Seekers Allowance and one of the following:
(a) You have parental responsibility for a child under the age of 5 or a child under the age of 18 who is in full-time education and normally lives with you
(b) You receive child tax credit which includes a disability or severe disability element
(c) You receive a disabled child premium
(d) You receive a disability premium, enhanced disability premium or severe disability premium.
(e) You receive a pensioner premium, higher pensioner premium or enhanced pensioner premium.
(f) You are aged 65 or over


4.      You receive child tax credit by virtue of an award which is based on an annual income not exceeding £17,005  and one of the following:
(a) You have parental responsibility for a child under the age of 5 or a child under the age of 18 who is in full-time education and normally lives with you.
(b) You receive child tax credit which includes a disability or severe disability element.
(c) You receive a disabled child premium.
(d) You are aged 65 or above.


5.      You receive Universal Credit, and have an earned income of between zero and £1,418 in at least one of the twelve preceding assessment periods and one of the following:  
(a) You have limited capability for work or limited capability for work, and work-related activity
(b) You are in receipt of the disabled child element
(c) You have parental responsibility for a child under the age of 5 or under the age of 18 in full-time education who normally lives with you.
(d) You are aged 65 or over


6.      You have a Gross taxable annual household Income of less than £17,005 and one of the following:
(a) You are in receipt of the disabled child element.
(b) You have parental responsibility for a child under the age of 5 or under the age of 18 in full-time education who normally lives with you.
(c) You receive a disability premium, enhanced disability premium or severe disability premium.
(d) You are aged 65 or over.
(e) You are in employment.
(f) You previously served in the armed forces.


7.     You receive Pension Credits covering Savings Credit only and you do not receive the Guaranteed Credit element of Pension Credit and one of the following:
(a) You have parental responsibility for a child under the age of 5 or a child under the age of 18 who is in full-time education and normally lives with you.
(b) You receive child tax credit which includes a disability or severe disability element.
(c) You receive a disabled child premium.
(d) You receive a disability premium, enhanced disability premium or severe disability premium.
(e) You receive a pensioner premium, higher pensioner premium or enhanced pensioner premium.


8.      You receive Housing Benefit in the relevant assessment period and one of the following:
(a) You have parental responsibility for a child under the age of 5 or a child under the age of 18 who is in full-time education and normally lives with you.
(b) You receive child tax credit which includes a disability or severe disability element.
(c) You receive a disabled child premium.
(d) You receive a disability premium, enhanced disability premium or severe disability premium.
(e) You receive a pensioner premium, higher pensioner premium or enhanced pensioner premium.
(f) You are aged 65 or over.


The number of Broader Group applications is limited each year, and so they are awarded on a first-come, first-served basis.
